Angola: Unesco Recommends More Investment in Education

Luanda — The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Thursday recommended that donors at international level increase investment, between 7 and 10 percent, in the education and training sector in order to avoid a global disaster in the face of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The information was provided by the Minister of State for Social Affairs, Carolina Cerqueira, at the end of the World Meeting on Education, organised under the aegis of UNESCO, by video-conference, with the participation of the President of the Republic, João Lourenço.

The main objective of the meeting was the mobilisation of resources for the financing of education, at a global level, in order to circumvent the negative effects of the Covid-19 pandemic in the education sector.

In statements to the press, at the end of the session, Carolina Cerqueira considered important the participation of President João Lourenço in the meeting and highlighted the fact that it was the first time that Angola was represented at the highest level.

The Director General of UNESCO, Audrey Azoulay , and the UN Secretary General, António Guterres, addressed the opening session.

The presidents of Rwanda, Paul Kagame, Kenya, Uhuru Kenyatta, Tunisia, Kais Saied, Namibia, Hage Geingob, among others, also took part in the meeting.

The meeting was preceded by a ministerial meeting, also in the video-conference system, where Angola was represented by the Minister of Education, Luisa Grilo.
